Can You Get an STD from Kissing? What You Need to Know
Jan 27, 2025
Kissing is low-risk for STDs – but not zero-risk. We explain CDC-backed exceptions (like herpes) and why clinic testing provides peace of mind.
STDs That Can Spread Through Kissing
Herpes (HSV-1):
Transmits via cold sores. 67% of adults under 50 have HSV-1 (CDC).
Syphilis:
Rare, but possible if sores are present on the lips/mouth.
3 Kissing Scenarios and Risks
Closed-Mouth Kissing: Near-zero risk.
Open-Mouth Kissing: Low risk (unless sores are present).
Kissing with Sores: High herpes/syphilis risk.
When to Get Tested
If you or your partner have mouth sores or have kissed someone with visible symptoms, it’s a good idea to get tested.
Can HIV Spread Through Kissing?
No. HIV requires blood/semen contact (CDC).
